Tens of thousands of people are expected to pack Jersey Shore towns this weekend, but as seen in the last week -- a trip to the beach can turn deadly this time of year because of rough surf and limited lifeguards.
There have been many incidents already in the last week, including two deaths and more than a dozen rescues. Last Thursday, a man lost his life in Ocean City. On Saturday, another drowning in Loveladies, Long Beach Island. In Atlantic City, another 13 rescues, and last evening -- two people were rescued in Island Beach State Park.
September has the potential to be a deadly month because there are so few lifeguards. While the ocean is still in the mid-70s, the water is rougher. It’s also peak hurricane season and even far away storms will send powerful swells, which can overcome even experienced swimmers.
Due to the increased risks, lifeguards are urging beachgoers to be very careful.
“I can't emphasize the point enough- stay out of the ocean if you're not a good swimmer. Especially when there are no lifeguards on duty,” said Harry Harsin, chief lifeguard of Belmar Beach.
