After three nor'easters over a short period of time, Rep. Lee Zeldin is calling for emergency dredging off the south shore of Long Island.
The storms have led to large piles of sand that are dangerous for boaters and harmful to the environment.
The focal point of the call for dredging comes at Moriches Inlet, where navigation is especially harrowing.
Rep. Zeldin is calling on the Army Corps of Engineers to perform the task and get rid of the sand that is blocking the inlet and critical access to the Atlantic Ocean.
"It's clear that regardless of what happens in the next nor'easter that there's a need for emergency dredge," says Rep. Zeldin. "But there's a possibility that a week from now, this situation might actually be worse than it is today."
Local fisherman and charter boat captain Joe Tangel has seen the issue firsthand, and is worried for his business.
"I'm a full-time fisherman, I support of family of four -- this could put me out of business and shut me down completely if it fills in anymore," says Tangel. "It's too dangerous to take paying customers around the inlet at times."
The Coast Guard is currently advising against boat travel through the inlet.
