Red Bank Regional High School will remain closed until further notice after it was confirmed that a student at the school had contracted coronavirus, according to Assemblywoman Serena DiMaso.
Red Bank Regional has been closed since Tuesday after it was determined that a previously confirmed patient of the virus – a 27-year-old Little Silver resident – is siblings with the student at the school who has the illness.
“These sorts of decisions are never made lightly and school officials have been presented with copious information and guidance from the Department of Health and the medical community in making the decision to close the high school,” DiMaso said in a statement. “Red Bank Regional officials have made the right call here for the public health safety of our residents and I fully support them in this.”
School officials say that classes will be held virtually until further notice.
“Although our students will not be attending school in person during the virtual school sessions, these days are counted by the NJ Department of Education as official school days. Extra-curricular activities and sports are suspended for the present time but we will update you as soon as possible,” school officials posted on the district’s website.
There are currently 23 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey. A 69-year-old Little Ferry man with underlying health conditions has died from the virus.
