East Brunswick schools to close following confirmed case of coronavirus in town
East Brunswick officials have closed all of the town’s schools through the end of the week after a “presumptive positive” case of coronavirus COVID-19 was confirmed in the town.
State health officials on Wednesday confirmed eight new cases around the state, with two in Middlesex County. East Brunswick officials said Wednesday evening that one of those cases was in their town.
School Superintendent Dr. Victor Valeski said in a phone message to parents that the district would reassess the situation on Sunday to determine if schools would reopen.
“The township has instituted a comprehensive emergency response plan, in coordination with Federal, State and County Health Officials,” East Brunswick officials said in a statement.
The town also stated that the East Brunswick Senior Center will be closed through March 29 as a precaution. The elderly are particularly vulnerable to the virus.
There are currently 23 cases of COVID-19 in New Jersey, including one death. A 69-year-old man from Little Ferry died on Tuesday from complications surrounding the virus. Health officials said that he had other underlying health issues.
