A Monmouth County cross country coach will run 48 miles in 48 hours to benefit COVID-19 relief.
As the head coach of Red Bank Regional High School’s cross country and track teams, Brendan McGoldrick is used to telling athletes to pick up the pace. But this weekend he will be the one trying to beat the clock as he runs the equivalent of two marathons.
“The general challenge is that I’m going to be running four miles every four hours for 48 hours straight,” says McGoldrick. It was put together originally by a Navy Seal named David Goggins.
The coach will start his run Saturday afternoon and will run different routes near his Matawan home.
“In between, I’ll do some YouTube updates and Instagram updates and things like that to let all the donors know,” he says.
The proceeds raised will to Red Bank Regional’s school-based youth service program called The Source and will benefit COVID-19 relief.
The Source at schools is working on rental assistance for people that have lost their jobs during the pandemic, as well as funeral assistance for a student who lost a father to the virus.

“That’s who I am really trying to raise the money for,” McGoldrick says.
McGoldrick has already raised close to $2,000. He says that he hopes to double that amount by the time he finishes the run on Monday.
“We’re accepting any donation, big or small – but if it’s a donation in increments of $48, they will know it’s specifically for this, so we really, really appreciate any amount of support to just getting the word out,” he says.
McGoldrick says that to finish on time he will have to stay on a schedule – including doing four-mile runs at midnight and at 4 a.m.
More information about the fundraiser can be found on Red Bank Regional’s website.
