A Greenwich man was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run.
A judge sentenced Andrew Schmidt, 20, to two years behind bars for fatally striking Edward Setterberg, 43, with a car on East Putnam Avenue in 2016. Schmidt, who was 17 at the time, previously pleaded guilty to manslaughter and evading arrest.
Police say Schmidt never stopped and then tried to cover up the crime. He told police he hit a deer.
"The defendant left the scene, knew what he did, tried to cover it up," says state's attorney Richard Colangelo. "Yes he was 17 when it happened but that doesn't condone it, doesn't justify it."
The judge called the incident "reckless and callous" and told Schmidt there was "no excuse" for his actions.
Schmidt did apologize in court and read from a prepared statement saying, "When I get out I plan on making something of myself and being a law abiding citizen."
Schmidt has been out on bond since his arrest about 2 1/2 years ago. His sentence was immediately imposed and he was taken into custody.
