The chief of the Ramapo Lenape tribe and a Virginia man are accused committing criminal mischief at a Mahwah club, police said in a press release issued Friday.
Authorities said that surveillance video from cameras located on a bridge owned by the Ramapo Hunt and Polo Club captured a man on May 9 tampering with the camera by turning the lens in an attempt to change the camera’s angle and available view. Police identified the man as Steven Smith, 29, of Blacksburg, Virginia.
Officials said the video also showed that Smith was driven to the scene by another man, who was identified as Dwaine Perry, 69, of Hillburn, New York. Police said Perry can be seen on the bridge in the surveillance images. He is the chief of the Ramapo Lenape tribe, which owns the land at 95 Halifax Rd.
Police said the damage to the property was more than $5,000.
A civilian complaint was filed charging both Smith and Perry with one count of criminal mischief.
The men both have a court date set for July 13 at Mahwah Municipal Court.
