Race for sheriff between Shaun Golden and Jeff Cantor heats up in Monmouth County
The race for sheriff in Monmouth County is heating up with less than three weeks to go until Election Day.
Incumbent Republican Sheriff Shaun Golden is running against Democrat Jeff Cantor.
Voters say the heroin epidemic is one of the top concerns in the county. News 12 New Jersey spoke with Sheriff Golden at his drug forum to educate Monmouth County students.
"We have to continue to work with our doctors and physicians and our physical therapists around the county to make sure we're not robo-scripting our opiates," Golden says.
Cantor, a councilman in Marlboro, has his own plan to battle the heroin problem. He says he would create a task force to tackle the drug and focus on recovery.
"One of the things I'd like to do is take a wing of the jail in Monmouth County and convert it to a treatment facility," Cantor says.
Cantor is a colonel in the Army Reserves. He says he would like to see more visible security at New Jersey's so-called "soft targets."
"Areas where people congregate like movies, malls, train stations," Cantor says.
But Sheriff Golden says he is already on that issue.
"We secured a lot of that money through grants. And I'll fight for every grant dollar to come back to Monmouth County," Golden says.
Both candidates are opposed to a controversial plan to house civilians at Naval Weapons Station Earle. They agree that it is wrong for Monmouth County and would put the base at risk.
