Prosecutors: Man waited outside ex's home, gave chase before deadly crash
A star basketball player for Nassau Community College is charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with a car chase that ended in a deadly crash in Hempstead.
On Monday night, prosecutors say 23-year-old Dana King Jr. waited outside of his ex-girlfriend's home. When the woman left her house, she entered 22-year-old Jimmy Hayes' car. Authorities say King chased the vehicle, leading to a 6-mile, high-speed chase. It ended in Hempstead when King Jr. allegedly rammed his Audi into Hayes' BMW. The vehicle then collided with a tree, killing Hayes instantly. The female passenger was listed in critical but stable condition.
News 12 spoke with King Jr.'s father after the suspect's arraignment. The victim's family cried out in the background. Dana King Sr. says his son was set to graduate from Nassau Community College in May. He says he's deeply sorry for the loss of life.
Hayes was the father of two girls, a 2-year-old and a 2-week-old. His aunt says the entire family is devastated.
Last year, King. Jr. led the college to its third straight regional title.
A stay-away order of protection has been issued for King Jr.'s ex-girlfriend. He's due back in court Friday.
