Port Authority representatives are promising NYC-bound PATH passengers a faster commute ? they will just have to wait seven years for it.
The Port Authority, which operates PATH, announced Wednesday that $500 million will be spent to make service faster and allow the system to handle 20 percent more riders.
?We are taking a major step in moving this rail system from one of the oldest in the country to one of the newest in the country,? Port Authority Chairman Anthony Coscia said.
The PATH system was constructed around 100 years ago. Most of the tunnels were dug in the 1870s.
The Port Authority says there is more pressure to improve the PATH system because of new homes being built in Harrison and due to the growing Jersey City waterfront.
Part of the plan includes the addition of more trains and the installation of new signals. All 340 rail cars will also be replaced.
The plan also calls for the Port Authority to build another passenger rail tunnel into New York. Authority officials say it will take seven years to finish the upgrades.
