There have been seven major crashes at Teterboro Airport since 2005, including a crash that claimed two lives Monday, according to Port Authority records.
An average of 170,000 planes take off and land at Teterboro Airport each year, the Port Authority says. Monday’s Learjet crash occurred less than a mile from the airport and renewed some neighbors' fears regarding air traffic in the area.
“[The planes] fly so low over the parking lot and over the building that you can literally see the name of the plan and everything else,” says Nancy Pigot, who works near the airport.
Teterboro Airport has been in operation since 1919. But over time, the area developed to become congested with commercial, retail and residential areas.
The Learjet in the most recent incident crashed into the parking lot of Carlstadt’s DPW yard. Three buildings and over a dozen cars were damaged or destroyed.
“To have [the airport] in such a small town like here, it’s scary,” says Katarina Paneer, who also works in town.
Some residents say that they want to see flight restrictions. Others have suggested that the airport be shut down. But many residents don't see that as an option since Teterboro Airport supports nearly 15,000 people.
The NTSB says that they are looking into whether or not wind played a factor into the crash. Investigators are expected to remain on the scene for several days.
