Several New Jersey police unions are working to raise money to benefit a Jersey Shore hot dog seller who was injured when a car crashed into his hot dog stand.
Wunder Wiener owner Jerry LaCrosse ran the hot dog stand for decades with his wife. The building was destroyed by a vehicle on June 11. LaCrosse was injured and is now undergoing rehabilitation.
Now several police unions have begun selling hot dogs at the Route 9 location in Beachwood to help LaCrosse get back on his feet. All the proceeds benefit LaCrosse.
“It’s an icon. Everybody that has ever [eaten] here can say nothing but good about Jerry and the Wunder Wiener,” says Beachwood resident Pat McKenan.
The hot dog fundraiser will also take place Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day.
“I want Jerry to know that you’re not alone in this fight. We hope to see you soon. Speedy recovery,” says Philip Schena from PBA Local 253. “We want you and your family to rest assured that no matter what happens the PBAs of 237 and 253 are definitely here to help out with anything you guys need."
The people running the fundraiser say that they are trying to keep the recipes as close to LaCrosse’s as possible.
LaCrosse says that he is amazed by the effort. He says that he plans to reopen the Wunder Wiener – just not as close to the highway as last time.
