Hoboken police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a potential witness to the assault of a woman.

Authorities said officers responded to a report of an assault around 1 a.m. Sunday in the area of Second and Madison streets.

Upon their arrival, officers found a 38-year-old woman who explained that she was walking home when an unknown man approached her and grabbed her from behind. Police said the man unsuccessfully attempted to assault the victim by grabbing her and touching her in an inappropriate manner.

The victim was able to fight off her attacker and called for help. Authorities said she did not suffer any serious physical injury. The victim described the man as wearing all black clothing, and he was last seen running west on Second Street.

Hoboken police on Wednesday released a photo of a person who was near the scene of the incident and can potentially provide valuable information to further the investigation.

Anyone who recognizes the individual is asked to contact the Hoboken Police Department at 201-420-2100. Any other witnesses are also asked to reach out to police. All information will be kept confidential.
