Police: Man confesses to killing 3 with kitchen knife
Authorities say they found three bodies in an Irvington apartment Wednesday after a 22-year-old man confessed to a triple homicide.
Police say Rakeen Gartrell walked into a Newark precinct and confessed to killing his girlfriend and her parents at an apartment near the police station. When police went to the apartment at 29 Arverne Terrace, they found the bodies of 22-year-old LaToya Thomas and her parents, Elsie Thomas and Leroy Cooper. All three were stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, police say.
According to investigators, the bodies were found on the second floor of the two-family home.
Police say Gartrell and LaToya had been arguing, but have not determined what the argument was about. They believe Gartrell stabbed LaToya first before killing her parents.
Gartrell is charged with three counts of murder.
