Police say a driver fleeing the scene of a crash in Hoboken struck a pedestrian on the sidewalk.
Hoboken police say that the crash happened around 3 p.m. Tuesday when the driver, who has not been named, was involved in a crash near 1st and Bloomfield streets.
Luis Salgado was the other driver involved in the crash. He says that he is lucky to be alive.
“It was going really fast,” he says. “It hit me in the back wheel and spun me. Thankfully I was able to control the car.”
Police say that the driver drove off after the crash by driving on the sidewalk for at least two blocks before hitting a pedestrian near 1st and Hudson streets. The driver then crashed into an apartment building located at 99 Hudson St., about 100 feet from the Hoboken Police Station.
“We heard this car just go through the sidewalk, hit the person over there and then hit the building,” says witness Tushar Alagh.
The driver was still in the car when officers came out to arrest him, according to officials.
“On a day that the weather is very nice, it’s unfortunate we have one pedestrian that is seriously hurt. But it’s amazing only one person was struck,” says Hoboken Police Chief Ken Ferrante.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition.
Several streets around the crash sites were closed for a few hours following the incident, but have since been reopened.
The Hudson County Regional Crash Team is investigating the incident.
