Police say a car sideswiped two other vehicles Wednesday morning on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway in Syosset, killing an ambulette driver.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. on the southbound side of the expressway, about 200 yards from where it begins off Jericho Turnpike.
Police say a black Infinity sideswiped a stopped Honda SUV and ambulette, killing a 74-year-old man who was standing outside his vehicle on the shoulder. Police identified the man as Herman Hanson, of Hempstead.
The ambulette, police say, was transporting a female patient and her relative was following close behind in the SUV.
The owner of 1st Choice Ambulette says Hanson had been with the company for more than a decade and was well-liked. They offered condolences to his family.
There's no word yet on what caused the crash, but authorities say since the Infinity wound up about 100 yards from the point of impact, speed or distracted driving could have been factors. They say the Infinity driver was not drunk or high.
The crash shut down the southbound lanes for more than seven hours.
