A Middlesex County town has just passed an ordinance that virtually bans the sale of electronic cigarettes in town.
Piscataway officials have passed an ordinance that restricts where vape shops can operate and where e-cigarettes can be sold. Officials say that it is all in an effort to stop people, especially teenagers, from using these products.
"Anytime you put something in your mouth and you're smoking it through your lungs, it can't possibly be a good thing,” says Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler. “I think anybody in the general public understands that."
Under the new ordinance, businesses cannot sell vapes or vape products within 500 meters of a school, church, funeral home or park. This makes it virtually impossible to sell the products anywhere in town.
"You can't outright ban the entire town but by putting these 500-meter zones around those sites it covers a substantial portion of Piscataway,” Wahler says.
Anyone who violates the ordinance faces a $250 fine for the first offense.
The mayor says that he is waiting to see if anyone will challenge the law or if other towns will follow his example.
Piscataway enacted a similar ordinance two years ago to restrict the sale of firearms.
