A pedestrian lost her life crossing Route 22 in North Plainfield Monday morning.

Alba Castro, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. According to witnesses, Castro was hit by a car around 6 a.m. while crossing the road against a red light.

Castro?s death is under investigation. The car?s driver, 22-year-old Plainfield resident Timothy McPleasant, has not been charged in her death. Investigators say McPleasant was on his way to work at the time of the crash.

A free shuttle was started on Route 22 in response to an increase in pedestrian deaths. Approximately 6,000 riders use the shuttle each month to cross the busy road.
