PATH 33rd Street line to be suspended on weekends for upgrades starting in August
PATH riders who take the 33rd Street line on the weekend will soon have to look for alternatives.
Weekend PATH service on the line will be suspended from early August through December while safety upgrades are completed.
Service will be suspended from 12:01 a.m. Saturdays until 5 a.m. Mondays. Trains between Newark and the World Trade Center and between Journal Square and Hoboken will run as normal.
Direct service will be added between Hoboken and the World Trade Center.
Shuttle buses will also be provided and will make stops between the World Trade Center and 29th Street along Sixth and Seventh avenues.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says the upgrades are federally mandated.
Among these is an emergency braking system called Positive Train Control, a system designed to monitor and control a train's movements.
PTC wasn't being used when an Amtrak train derailed in Philadelphia, killing eight people and injuring over 200.
More information about the PATH upgrades can be found at the Port Authority website.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
