Parking could soon get pricier in parts of New Jersey due to a new law Gov. Phil Murphy signed on Thursday.

The law would give six of New Jersey’s most populous cities – Edison, Elizabeth, Jersey City, Newark, Paterson and Woodbridge – the option to add the parking tax. It would fund pedestrian tunnels, walkways and bridges at mass transit stations

“I don’t think it will affect anything but my pocket,” says Perth Amboy resident Kenny Smith.

But Woodbridge resident Brenda Aramboles says that she doesn’t think the 3.5% tax is that bad.

“There is a lot of pedestrians crossing over here and there and that money would be put to good use,” she says.

The law went into effect immediately.
