Parking garage near Hicksville LIRR station set to reopen in early 2019
A parking garage near the busy Hicksville Long Island Rail Road station will reopen in the beginning of 2019 following months of emergency repairs.
The Town of Oyster Bay parking garage shutdown in September left more than 1,000 commuters scrambling to find new parking spots.
"It's going to be a Happy New Year for commuters who utilize the Hicksville Train Station as repairs to the parking garage are nearing completion and the facility will reopen the first week of January," Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said in a statement.
As previously reported, the garage had been plagued with problems since shortly after it opened in 2011. There were cracks in the ceiling, concrete falling onto cars and water dripping from roofs.
The town says it has completed repairs of structural cracks, installation of concrete decking reinforcement and replacement of the carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide detection system.
Over the next few weeks, workers will be finalizing repairs to lighting, heating, ventilation, fire alarm systems and security cameras.
Saladino says although some finishing touches will be needed in January, the garage will be open.
