Officials: Holiday traffic mostly moving smoothly in NJ
Holiday drivers headed home on Sunday after celebrating Thanksgiving.
On Sunday evening, the volume of cars decreased on the New Jersey Turnpike in the Woodbridge section, and the lines at the gas stations grew shorter.
However, some people who headed home midday on Sunday didn't have an easy ride.
"I don't want to say it's been a nightmare. It's just been heavy, a lot of congestion," said Bill DeMato, of Woodbridge. "A lot of out-of-staters not driving like Jersey people."
The George Washington Bridge also had 40-minute delays much of the afternoon and evening, and there were 30-minute delays at the tunnels. The New Jersey Turnpike heading to Delaware had a five-mile delay.
An estimated 48 million people traveled nationwide this weekend, and 89 percent of those used their cars.
While most people didn't worry much about the New Jersey Turnpike, those headed across the river to Long Island and Brooklyn were most anxious.
