The Dunes Boardwalk Cafe on the Ocean Grove boardwalk was consumed by a five-alarm fire Saturday, leaving the structure as a total loss.
Officials say the building had been smoldering overnight into Sunday. A crane was seen taking apart what's left of the building.
Firefighters say they were able to put out a bulk of the fire on Saturday but searched for hotspots Sunday. The fire has since been completely put out.
Officials say the building has to be demolished due to the damage done by the fire.
Shaun Golden, the sheriff of Monmouth County, told News 12 they received calls about the fire around 11:28 a.m. It was contained to the popular eatery, but a shift in wind caused continuing flare-ups through the afternoon.
No injuries were reported. Officials say the fire started in a commercial building at the northern edge of the boardwalk and quickly spread.
Several other buildings, including gift shops, were also damaged in the fire.
New Jersey state police were seen on the scene with a cadaver dog who searched the debris as a precaution. Officials say they don't believe anyone was trapped inside.
The North End Pavilion was already destroyed once during Hurricane Sandy. Now for the second time in less than seven years, this small community is feeling the loss of a beloved town landmark.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
