The NYPD says a person is dead and four others are injured after a car crashed into a Mill Basin senior living facility late Thursday night.
Police say they responded to Sunrise Senior Living Facility on Strickland Avenue just before 1 a.m.
Investigators say a 22-year-old man driving a Tesla was speeding when he lost control and crashed into a fence, and then a wall.
They say five people in the car were taken to the hospital. The 18-year-old passenger who died has been identified as Jack Levy.
Police say the driver of the car and another 18-year-old rear seat passenger are in stable condition.
A 24-year-old male passenger who was riding in the front and a 22-year-old man who was riding in the back suffered minor injuries.
Residents say while accidents in the area are rare, speeding is very common along Strickland Avenue.
The DOT said in a statement, "DOT takes every fatality on our roadways seriously and we are deeply sorry for this family's loss. We have a proactive program of redesigning streets to reduce tragedies like this one and as with all locations where a fatal crash occurs, DOT will evaluate the design of the street and the circumstances of the crash to make the appropriate safety enhancements. We are aware of the speeding issues in the area and will take an extensive look at Strictland Avenue and National Drive to find feasible and safe solutions."
