NJ weighs in on Torre's decision to leave Yankees
Yankees fans in the Garden State are slamming The Boss Friday. The fans say the Yankees organization made a big mistake by letting Joe Torre walk away after managing the team for 12 years. Torre, whose contract is set to expire, turned down a one-year $5 million deal to return on Thursday. If he accepted, it would have been a $2 million pay cut. The contract contained various performance-related bonuses, that could have added up to $3 million to the deal if the team reached the World Series. Under the deal, Torre would also have been invited back for 2009 if the team made it to the World Series.Randy Levine, the team president of the Yankees, praised Torre as a great person and a great man. He said the organization respects and admires everything Torre did for the team. The Yankees made the playoffs for 12 straight seasons under Torre and won four World Series championships. This year was the third year in a row the team failed to win a series in the playoffs.Names mentioned as possible successors to Torre include Yankees bench coach and former player Don Mattingly, former bench coach and former player Joe Girardi and Tony La Russa, the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.
