NJ Transit: Summer commute will be rough
NJ Transit officials admitted during a legislative hearing Wednesday that the summer will be tough for commuters.
Officials from NJ Transit were first to speak at the special hearing and said commuters could face up to an extra half hour to 45 minutes on their commute each morning if they are forced to take PATH trains or the ferries into Manhattan. Officials said bus service, as well as PATH trains and ferries, will be increased for the summer. In addition, Morris and Essex line trains will head to Hoboken instead of NY Penn Station. The changes will be in effect from July 10 to September 1.
NJ Transit said, for now, the best plan is to cut service on the Morris-Essex line and reduce fares on that line. However, that plan was met with tough criticism from New Jersey legislators.
The agency also called on Amtrak to have emergency staffing in place in case any major service disruption or derailment occurs.
