It was a rough morning for some New Jersey Transit riders after the agency canceled at least 17 trains during the Friday morning commute.
Most of the cancellations involved the Morris and Essex, Montclair-Boonton, Pascack Valley and Northeast Corridor lines.
A spokesperson for NJ Transit says that there were several factors that led to the cancellations. They include the installation and testing of the Positive Train Control safety system – an ongoing project – and a higher-than-usual number of crew absences due to Thursday night’s rain-delayed Beyoncé and Jay Z concert at MetLife Stadium.  Train crews that had to work late did not have the required rest time between their regular shifts.
Some NJ Transit riders tell News 12 New Jersey that they are frustrated with what they say are constant issues with NJ Transit.
“A lot of cancellations and they keep gouging up on the fees,” says one rider. “It’s like I’m paying for what? I’m paying for inconvenience…the service is getting more terrible.”
NJ Transit released a statement Friday afternoon that says that the agency, "has taken steps to address these issues by recruiting and training additional locomotive engineers. We anticipate a class graduating within the next week that will add nine engineers to the roster."
