The hooded sweatshirt is a wardrobe staple for many teenagers, but it is going out of style at local high schools.
Some schools around New Jersey are banning the sweatshirts for safety reasons, citing concern hoods can conceal a student's identity on surveillance cameras.
"When you have a hood on, everybody looks the same," says Lorna Cantale, a Wayne Valley High School parent. "So I think it's definitely an issue, and I'd be happy with a ban."
Morristown High School placed a ban on all headgear - including the popular hoodies - this year. Mike Bruchac, the school's vice principal, says the ban has nothing do to with violence, just that hoods don't belong in school.
Students at Morristown don't agree with the new dress policy. "At least the majority of students feel that sweatshirts are just an item of clothing for comfort - so the ban is pretty insane," says senior Alexandra Burke.
Wayne Valley is updating the school's dress code, which may include a similar policy, a spokesperson with the school district says, but they haven't decided yet.
