The holiday runs through Sept. 4. School supplies under $3,000 are exempt from the state's 6.625% sales tax.
Eligible items include art and sports supplies, textbooks, computers and more. Clothing is excluded.
Officials said the goal is easing costs for families. Retailers expect to be busy this weekend as parents shop tax free.
