Progressive Democrats in New Jersey are working to keep new, stricter voter ID laws from passing. They say the laws could lead to suppression at the polls.
Some members of the party say the laws are designed to repress voters in primarily poor, Democratic constituencies. One of the proposed guidelines would require voters to show a photo ID.
Proponents of the laws argue that they are meant to guard against voter fraud. The Republican-backed voter ID bills have stalled so far in the Legislature.
