People who work in Illinois can rest assured that their social media passwords are safe from their employers, and New Jersey could be next.

Illinois has just passed a law making it illegal for employers to ask job-seekers to fork over passwords to their social media accounts such as Facebook and Twitter.

In an effort to vet job applicants, some companies and government agencies have been asking for social media passwords so they can have a look at the applicant's personal profile. Critics say this equals a serious invasion of privacy.

Several other states are considering similar bans, including New Jersey.
