The New Jersey Assembly has passed legislation to allow same-sex marriage that the state Senate approved Monday. Gov. Chris Christie says he will veto the bill.
Christie has promised "very swift action" once the bill reaches his desk. Christie spokesman Michael Drewniak said no action on the bill would be taken before Friday.
The Democrat-controlled Legislature has two years to try to override the governor, something they have yet to be successful at doing.
Six states and Washington, D.C. recognize gay marriage. Washington state's new gay marriage law is set to take effect in June.The Associated Press wire service contributed to this report.
