A Newark police officer is facing charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a young child.
Officer Manny Marques, 36, was charged with first-degree sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
The West Caldwell resident is being held on $225,000 bail.
A spokesperson for the Newark Police Department says that Marques, a 14-year veteran of the force, was immediately suspended without pay after his arrest.
