A day after President Donald Trump announced the U.S.’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement, Newark’s mayor said New Jersey’s most-populated city will uphold its commitment to climate control.
“Newark is a leader in acting locally to support a broad range of climate control initiatives. In the face of President Trump’s insane decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, Newark will adopt, honor and uphold our commitment to climate control. We will work together with other cities across America to create a 21st century clean energy economy,” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said in a written statement.
U.S. Sen. Cory Booker said a city like Newark is seriously threatened by the president’s decision.
“This is not about global warming for them simply. This is not about melting of ice caps to them simply. This is about the health of our children and the economic opportunity for our communities,” Booker said.
Trump announced his decision to abandon the accord on climate change Thursday and has asked for a renegotiation of the agreement’s terms
