Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced that the city is implementing a mandatory 8 p.m. curfew for residents as part of sweeping measures to limit the public’s exposure to coronavirus.
Baraka says that everyone must stay in their homes after 8 p.m. unless it is an emergency or the resident is coming from or going to work.
Other restrictions include all stores that do not sell food, medical supplies, prescriptions, gas or household goods must close until further notice. This includes retail stores, salons and barbershops.
Supermarkets may stay open beyond 8 p.m. – but patrons can only go there after 8 p.m. in an emergency.
The restrictions are similar to ones already implemented statewide by Gov. Phil Murphy.
Since all schools in the state were ordered to close, Baraka says that hardcopy packets of school work will be made available at the designated student breakfast and lunch distribution locations. He says that News 12 parent company and cable provider Altice will be providing free Wi-Fi to students.
Senior citizens and those with underlying health issues will be able to shop at the ShopRite on Springfield Avenue from 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. so that they do not have to worry about encountering other members of the public.
