A Newark pastor and former police officer is doing what he can to help keep the homeless warm this winter.

Pastor Tyrone Singletary and Bible Missionary Baptist Church are giving away sleeping bags to those who sleep on the streets. Singletary says that it was a need that had to be filled.

"We were riding, and we were happened to be under Penn Station one day and we saw so many people just lying on the cold concrete, with nothing. And that's when we said, ‘We have to do something,’” he says.

The pastor and his congregation plan to continue giving sleeping bags through Wednesday to those in need.
