Less than a week after announcing its closure, a charter school in Newark now says it will remain open.

M.E.T.S. Charter School celebrated its opening in August with a visit from Gov. Chris Christie.

A message posted on the school’s website on Friday announced that it would close at the end of the year. That decision was reversed on Wednesday, with officials saying they’re looking for a permanent location for the school starting next school year.

According to a letter posted online Monday by Interim Lead Administrator Madelyn Dullea, officials prefer to keep the school in Newark. However, the school may be relocated to Jersey City, where another M.E.T.S. Charter School already exists.

No specific reason was ever given for the initial decision to close the school. Board members only said that the school was not able to provide a high level education to the number of students enrolled.

As of Wednesday, the 230 students enrolled in grades nine through 12 were able to continue attending classes at the M.E.T.S. Charter School in Newark.
