New Jersey Transit makes preparations for snow season
New Jersey Transit says it's ready for whatever Mother Nature has in store for the Garden State, including snow.
At a maintenance facility in Kearny, officials say they are more than prepared with 20,000 pounds of salt and locomotives equipped with snowplows.
The facility has two Whitney Jet engine-powered snowblowers that put around 10,000 pounds of thrust, just like when it was used in a B52 Bomber.
"We do use this in the yards to help with clearing the switches," says Robert Lavell, vice president of rail operations. "The way it was done prior to that was by shovel and it would take hours to clear one switch."
Preventive maintenance has also included inspection of 750 switches and switch heaters, overhead wire systems and 12 moveable bridges.
Riders are encouraged to sign up for the MY Transit alert system, which delivers specific travel advisories to your cell.
