New Jersey Transit engineer rescues small dog on tracks
New Jersey Transit says a train engineer rescued a small dog that was on the tracks in Essex County.
Anthony Guzman says that he saw the animal near Newark while he was working on the Morris & Essex line. Guzman tells News 12 New Jersey that he was going over the Newark Drawbridge when he noticed the dog. He says that he was able to follow the dog until he needed to stop the train.
“At one point the dog finally gave up and just decided to sit down between the rails and just stop, so I waited a few seconds and then I just decided to go down onto the tracks and rescue the dog out of the rails and bring it up and to my locomotive,” Guzman says.
Guzman took the dog to the Secaucus station where crews were working to reunite the dog with its owners.
This marked the second time in the last six months that train crews have spotted a dog in distress on a busy rail line.
NJ Transit Conductor Howard Kempton performed a similar rescue last October when he spotted a dog on the tracks in East Orange. That dog, named Shelby, was eventually reunited with its owners.
Anyone who recognizes the dog rescued Tuesday is asked to contact the Secaucus Animal Shelter at 201-348-3213.
The Associated Press wire services contributed to this report.
