New Jersey residents work to gather donations for Harvey victims
People across New Jersey say that they are working hard to gather donations for the people affected by Hurricane Harvey.
People from the coastal community of Sea Bright arrived at the Borough Hall to leave donations. Amy Estep was among the first to donate.
“I can’t imagine losing all that you have. It’s terrible,” she says.
Sea Bright is still recovering from the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy. Borough employees who organized the donation drive tell News 12 New Jersey that the memories of Sandy are still fresh in their minds while they help out those impacted by Harvey.
Over in Edison, Rabbi Bernhard Rosenberg organized his own donations drive, coordinating Kosher and non-Kosher food donations from New Jersey businesses.
“Our goal is 1,000 meals for the Sabbath. It may be this Sabbath or the next Sabbath. It depends when we get the food out,” Rosenberg says.
To donate: Email Rabbi Epstein or call 214-724-3282
In Wall Township, 17-year-old high school student Courtney Mahoney organized her own donation drive. She is calling it “Sandy Helps Harvey.” She says that watching Hurricane Harvey coverage on TV reminded her of how the Jersey Shore was affected by Sandy.
"They're showing all these people coming out with one suitcase for a family of four or five. And it's not enough for them,” the teen says.
Mahoney says that she is setting up drop-off points at her home and other locations for donations. She then plans to send them to Texas.
Drop off location: 3014 Atlantic Avenue, Allenwood, NJ -- Call 732-832-5617 for more information
Officials say that over 20 people have been killed by the storm. Thousands are displaced.
