Hundreds of people are moving out of New Jersey for warmer weather – Florida to be exact - and officials say that it all comes down to money.
Republican senator and former Florida Gov. Rick Scott says, “Thanks to poorly run and heavily taxed states like New York and New Jersey, residents are flocking to Florida.”
Florida’s CFO says that about 900 people a day are moving into the Sunshine State, calling New York and New Jersey “financial train wrecks.”
The latest National Migration Study from United Van Lines showed that New Jersey is the most moved-from state. Almost 70% of the company’s moves are people leaving New Jersey.
Florida is a different story, with almost 60% of moves being people moving into Florida. This data is backed by the U.S. Census Bureau. Florida saw a 14.6% increase in population in the last decade. New Jersey saw just a 5.7% population increase in the last 10 years.
The largest percentage of people leaving New Jersey are retirees, but there are also people moving to Florida for job opportunities as the state has no state income tax.
