Housing advocates have been complaining the state is under calculating the need for affordable housing in New Jersey and on Thursday an appeals court agreed.
New Jersey now has six months to fix its affordable housing plan. The judges found that the current system uses outdated reports to underestimate the housing need. Advocates say the formula allowed suburban towns to discriminate against the poor.
Though the ruling delays more than 100 projects aimed to help New Jersey families, advocates say it will be worth the wait, if the governor keeps the work on track. The state department in charge of affordable housing has not yet commented on the ruling. Meanwhile, the League of Municipalities disagrees with the judges and says the ruling will open the door for developers to ignore their affordable housing obligations.
