Toll hikes went into effect throughout parts of New Jersey Sunday.
Tolls went up by as much as 36% on some authority roads in the state.
The decision to raise prices is controversial because the vote happened by the Turnpike Authority at the height of the pandemic, making it difficult for the public to give their input.
The toll hikes apply to the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Atlantic City Expressway. It will rise 36% on the Turnpike and 27% on the Parkway.
The money is going to fund a $24 billion construction plan that includes widening sections of the Turnpike and Parkway, building out cashless tolling and replacing a bridge between New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
And another hit for drivers is that the gas tax will increase the beginning October, adding nine cents to the gallon - that's among the highest tax rate in the nation.
