Some New Jersey companies and organizations are offering assistance to the people in the Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian’s devastation.
At least 44 people were killed and tens of thousands displaced from their homes when the storm passed through the island community. Officials say that the Bahamas is facing weeks or months ahead without electricity.
A New Jersey company is doing what it can to help alleviate some of those power issues. Carlstadt-based Snow Joe and Sun Joe is donating 100 solar and gas-powered generators along with their partner Firmin.
“We really hope that this will allow people in Abaco and other locations in the Bahamas to have power. At least enough power to run their refrigerator, to run emergency medical equipment,” says John Petrillo with the company.
The generators were sent to Miami where police are organizing a relief effort, according to Petrillo, and should be in the Bahamas within days.
Meanwhile, Tenafly-based Pet Res-Q is holding a donation event to help collect supplies for the Bahamas. The group is looking for things like crates, leashes, collars and flea medications. They're also collecting donations for people.
"Right now, we're collecting for anything breathing. This is a natural disaster. The people need help and whatever animals happen to survive definitely need help,” says Pet Res-Q founder Robyn Urman. “They need medication. We've gotten urgent pleas for insulin, medical supplies for people. The kids have no shoes. They don't have clean underwear. They have nothing."
Urman says that she will head to the Bahamas later this week to drop off donations. She says that she plans to bring at least 10 dogs back to New Jersey for new homes.
More information about the donation drive can be found on Pet Res-Q’s website.
