New Jersey Assembly postpones vote to override veto of voter registration bill
The New Jersey Assembly postponed a vote to override Gov. Chris Christie's veto of a voter registration bill.
The bill would automatically register drivers to vote when they receive or renew their driver's license.
The governor conditionally vetoed the bill earlier this month because he says it was too expensive and would cost $400,000 a year.
Democratic lawmakers say that they still hope to override the vote.
"In my opinion, a small amount of money to increase voter engagement and increase participation in our democracy is just too important," says Assemblyman Andrew Zwicker. "It's the right thing to do and we should absolutely pass this bill, so I do think the governor was wrong there."
The bill's sponsor says the vote was postponed because there were too many absences in the Assembly Thursday. The vote will be held in the Sept. 29 session.
