A New Canaan High School basketball coach has lost his job following his drug arrest.
Police in Stamford say they got a call Friday night about a suspicious man at a Shell gas station on West Avenue. Detectives say they arrived to find Jose Amor passed out with more than a dozen heroin packets, other drugs and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.
News 12 learned Monday that Amor has been let go from his position as an assistant boys basketball coach at New Canaan High School.
A spokesperson for New Canaan schools says Amor passed a background check before he was hired.
But this isn't Amor's first run-in with authorities. He was charged with hindering prosecution in connection with a 2016 shooting in Stamford but had his record cleared after pleading guilty to a lesser charge and completing a program for first-time offenders.
Amor's attorney, Marc Sherman, didn't want to comment on the specifics of the most recent case, but he said the opioid epidemic doesn't discriminate in its reach and impact.
Dr. Eric Collins, the physician-in-chief at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, says addiction is misunderstood and that parents should talk to their kids without demonizing the coach for his alleged behavior.
