The National Weather Service has confirmed that at least five tornadoes touched down in New Jersey on Thursday during a period of intense storms.
The agency says that an EF-1 tornado touched down in the Windsor section of Robbinsville.
The weather service also confirmed that an EF-2 tornado that touched down at the Washington Crossing Historic Park area in New Hope, Pennsylvania then crossed over the Delaware River into Mercer County. Peak winds clocked in at 115 mph.
Three other tornadoes had already been confirmed in New Jersey, including two in Ocean County and one in Essex County.
An EF-1 tornado touched down in the Cedar Bridge area of Barnegat Light, while an EF-2 tornado touched down in Waretown. The NWS originally stated that the Waretown tornado was also an EF-1, but upgraded the rating after observing the damage. Officials say that peak winds in that tornado topped at 115 mph.
An EF-1 tornado also touched down in Verona in the area of the Montclair Golf Club.
Additionally, two more tornadoes spawned from the same storm system have been confirmed so far in Pennsylvania.
The five tornado touchdowns in New Jersey nearly broke a record set on Nov. 16, 1989, where seven tornadoes touched down in the Garden State.
The National Weather Service has so far issued 23 tornado warnings in 2021. In comparison, only 22 tornado warnings have been issued in Normal, Oklahoma - an area that is known for tornado activity.
