N. Brunswick teacher arrested in alleged sexual assault
A North Brunswick High School teacher and coach is behind bars after allegedly sending sexually explicit text messages and phone calls to a student, police say.
School officials say they became aware of the incident on Thursday morning through an anonymous tip. They say they then notified the North Brunswick police department, who arrested 30-year-old Matthew Engelson.
Engelson, who coaches the girls junior varsity soccer team, was charged with misconduct and sexual assault.
School officials spoke with roughly 80 parents at an emergency meeting Friday evening and told them the kind of behavior Engelson exhibited will not be tolerated.
Engelson has been suspended from the school with pay. His bail is pending.
The schools superintendent says he has reached out to the student involved. He says she has been offered counseling.
