Mother says son was hospitalized due to bullying
A Rutherford mother says her teenage son who had cancer was bullied badly at school and no one is doing anything to help her.
Julia Morales is a single mother of four. She says the bullying of her 16-year-old son got so bad at Henry Becton High School in East Rutherford that he ended up in the hospital.
He was also beaten up by other students and was found lying on the bathroom floor by a teacher. The teen has ADD and had cancer at the time of the attack. Morales says other students called her son "cancer boy."
According to Morales, numerous letters sent to the school, a school district investigation and even a letter from Gov. Chris Christie's office produced no results.
"I just needed someone to listen to me," she says. "I didn't know what would happen to my child."
Morales has joined forces with the nonprofit group "Drums and Disabilities," an advocacy group for people with special needs. They've filed a civil suit, and are asking both the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office and the Department of Justice to investigate and file criminal charges against the district, the school, and the Department of Education. They hope the suit will get someone held accountable.
"She doesn't want money. No one wants money," says Pat Gesauldo, a family advocate. "She just wants justice."
A spokesperson for the East Rutherford School District tells News 12 New Jersey that they can't say much about confidential student matters.
In a statement the spokesperson says, "The administration responded appropriately and in strict compliance with the law in how it responded to the matter."
Morales' son now attends school in Lyndhurst.
