Soaring gas prices have forced a Bergen County town that used to shun mass transit to reconsider its position.

Businesses and local leaders in Montvale have established a commission to increase the number of trains and buses there. Around 16,000 people work in the community and 70 percent commute from outside the area, according to the borough.

"It's creating a dangerous situation ? with a tremendous amount of fuel consumption," says John DePinto, of the Montvale Planning Board.

Montvale currently has a train station, but it's located two miles from Montvale's office park. The first train does not stop until 10:30 a.m.

The commission wants trains to begin arriving at 8 a.m. with jitney service to office buildings. They are also demanding similar options for bus passengers from the Main and Bergen Line in Ramsey as well as express bus service from the Garden State Parkway.
